FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Question: Who needs an alarm permit?
Answer: Any person or entity (corporation, partnership, proprietorship, government, educational institution, etc.) owning or leasing a security alarm system, or on whose premises a security alarm system is maintained for protection of the property must have a permit. This includes fire, hold-up, panic, and burglar alarms. It does not include vehicle alarms.
Question: What is the permit fee?
Answer: The annual permit registration fee for alarm system users is as follows:
  • Residential (new/renewal) - $25.00
  • Commercial (new/renewal) - $25.00
Question: What is the fine for a false alarm?
Answer: Per permit year, fines for the first two false alarms at a permitted address are waived. Fines for subsequent alarms are as follows:
  • False Alarm 3 - $100.00
  • False Alarm 4 - $200.00
  • False Alarm 5 - $300.00
  • False Alarm 6 or more - $300.00 each + may be placed in verified response.
If police respond to an unregistered alarm, the owner will be fined $100.00
Question: What happens if I fail to pay a fine?
Answer: Failure of an alarm user to make payment of any penalty(ies) assessed within 30 days from the date of the invoice will result in alarm user being placed in verified response status until payment is received.
Question: What is a verified response status
Answer: When an address is place on verified response status, police will only respond if an on- site verification of an alarm has been done by the alarm owner or key holder, a witness observing criminal activity, a private guard service, or electronic feedback of criminal activity.
Question: Can I appeal a false alarm fine
Answer: Penalties and other enforcement decisions may be appealed by filing a written notice of appeal within 10 days after the date of notification of the assessment of penalty(ies) or other enforcement decision. The failure to give notice of appeal within this time period shall constitute a waiver of the right to contest the assessment of penalty(ies) or other enforcement decision.

Question: Are alarm permits transferable?
Answer: Alarm permits are not transferable from person to person or address to address.
